WENDY AND TOM DINE OUT

In 1929, Frederico "Rick" Getmor opened a cafe in the back of the family service station. He served good, home cooked food and he began to draw people from all over the state to his restaurant. The Randolph, "Rick's Cafe", takes its name from the original, "Rick's Cafe." Tom describes this eatery as "industrial", meaning that the ceiling is a jumble of pipes, girders and ducts. It resembles a reformed warehouse. the mustard colored walls have murals and paintings and the mustard color can be seen again on the Table clothes that are under a sheet of plexiglas. A single flower in a small vase adorns the table. Paper napkins with, "Rick's Cafe", imprinted on them pick up the same color scheme. Fans on tall pedestals can be seen at the end of some of the banquettes. The atmosphere is pleasant and basically quiet, in spite of the fact that it is a good place to take children.

ENTREE:

Cobb Salad ($8.50) Excellent - A very large, somewhat flat bowl containing greens, grilled chicken, bacon, eggs, black olives, tomatoes, carrots, red onion, and tri-colored peppers. An attractive presentation with the ingredients in "stripes" across the bowl. The tomatoes were not the usual tasteless winter variety that we find in most salads from Fall to Spring. The blue cheese dressing is served on the side and is filled with chunks of blue cheese.

DESSERT:

OTHER:

Service was good

Soft drinks served in oversized, plastic glasses

Plenty of free parking

Very casual dress

Adjacent to the Randolph Cinema

OVERALL:

??? This one is hard to rate. If we had to judge it just on the salads we had, we would give it an A- (Wendy dislikes plastic glasses!). However, looking around we saw meals that we did not think were of "A" quality. The clam strips appeared to be over breaded, the French fries looked soggy and lacking in color, and a broiled chicken plate looked very plain and unappetizing. You be the judge here and let us know what you think. We would return, but would probably get the Cobb Salad again.
