WENDY AND TOM DINE OUT

This is one of our favorite restaurants. It is such a little place with such a large amount of of class. People would probably call it "yuppie." The Sail Loft is along the Boston waterfront and it actually juts out into the water. This gives it a lovely view with boats anchored right beside its windows. The decor is nautical and is rough wood paneled with nautical blue formica table tops. We have been here several times and would certainly have given it an "A", but this time the portions were too small and this dropped our rating. The menu features mostly seafood, but with a nice variety and a nice presentation. There are many daily specials that change as the catch of the day changes. As always, the service and quality of food was superior.

RESTAURANT:

BOSTON SAIL LOFT

80 Atlantic Avenue, Boston, MA

DATE:

July 2, 1999

MEAL:

Lunch

DECOR:

Nautical

BREAD:

Italian Bread, very good chewy and fresh

SALAD:

APPETIZER:

Clam Chowder ($3.25/cup) Outstanding - This is the kind of chowder that allowed the spoon to stand up in it. It was exceptionally thick, but whipped so that it was also light, nicely seasoned, and had plenty of clams

ENTREE:

Fresh Broiled Seafood Casserole ($15.95) Excellent, but too small for the price. This dish was nicely prepared in a small scallop shell (about 3 1/2" wide)! It consisted of a very small bit of fish, a shrimp or 2, two scallops and a small piece of lobster, all covered lightly with butter and bread crumbs. Served with excellent butternut squash.

Single Boiled Lobster with Mussels ($14.95) Very Good - The lobster was 1 1/4 quarter pounds and there were enough mussels for a luncheon platter. The mussels were steamed and served plain with no sauce. This was a standard lobster meal with the lobster cooked just right. The restaurant served it with a proper lobster bid, metal lobster cracker, and a metal pick. A nice change from the usual plastic utensils.

DESSERT:

OTHER:

Fast service and very friendly and helpful wait staff

Parking on the surrounding streets and in a lot a few doors away

Dress is casual

This is a small restaurant that can be very crowded at peak hours

OVERALL:

A-

We really do not like giving this restaurant anything but an "A". All the other times we have been there we would have rated it a straight "A", but the portions were just too small this time. The atmosphere is fun, and it remains a favorite.
